Gilberto Gil na Bienal de Arte Digital 2022. Gil Futurível (credito: Pedro Murad)

Gilberto Gil visits Gil Futurível at the Bienal, talking about ancestry and futurism.

"Imprisoned as I was, I had to unleash my imagination. I had to use my imaginative abilities to free myself from that prison. The lyrics of Futurível take into account both of these aspects. I wanted to come out of there with a body that was looser and more complex, in line with the expectations of the new world that technology brings"

Gil went to meet himself. He went to transmute himself, through the work Gil Futurível, by the Azimov Labs collective of artists Clélio de Paula, Floriano Varejão, Lauro Gripa and Agência Rastro, on show at the Digital Art Biennial, which in 2022 will have the theme of conditions of existence, curated by Tadeus Mucelli.

Nothing is more significant than the virtual reality work of "Gil Futurível" when we talk about ways of existing and coexisting in complex times. The artist was thinking about his extreme condition and the ability to transcend beyond the body in order to resist and go beyond.

Gil took part in the process of capturing the images during the production phase of the work. However, he hadn't experienced the finished work, which goes through important parts of his career and work. In an appointment with Gil himself, he narrated the encounter between the author and his own work in a unique way through digital art.

"It's an extraordinary pleasure to be a guinea pig in new artistic experiments. Experiments that were already foreseen in my own work. I'm an author who completely fits into this futuristic perspective, of possible futures, of desirable futures" (Gilberto Gil, in January 2023).

The idea of memory in the digital field has always been a pre

occupation of the Digital Art Biennial, ever since the FAD, the digital art festival that brought the biennial to life in 2018. The work Gil Futurível, even digitally materializes the importance of collections, which can produce experiences.

"Collections and cultural artistic memory have in technologies a capacity for immortality... for infinite access to knowledge for many generations. It's up to us, curators, researchers, festivals, biennials and technology enthusiasts and creators, to focus on the value of our culture, to make it last over time." (Tadeus Mucelli, curator and researcher).

The Bienal is especially grateful not only to Gilberto Gil and his team for their generosity, but also to those involved in this work, which was only possible thanks to the commitment of the professionals involved and the encouragement of the Kusama Society, Oi and Oi Futuro for its full exhibition at the Bienal.

Projection in Domes, Workshop

The activity, which is part of a kind of extra programming created between the Digital Art Biennial and the FUMEC University, will receive Axel Cuevas, a Mexican digital artist based in the United States who participated in the Biennial exhibiting a work, to work on techniques of bio-art production and digital art

The Digital Art Biennial, an event conceived and carried out by the Digital Art Festival (FAD), had more than 40 thousand people passing through the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, between the months of February and April of this year, presenting a robust program that included symposia, performances, workshops, and exhibitions of works by 20 artists from different countries around the world. Now, the Bienal joins the FUMEC University to promote a 12-hour free workshop (upon registration), on May 18th and 19th, at the student center. The activity carried out in partnership with FUMEC's Computer Graphics and Digital Games Courses, will receive the artist Axel Cuevas (USA), creator of the work “Protoplasmic Routes” that had been exhibited at the Biennial of Digital Art exhibition, to teach the workshop that will work with projection techniques mapped in geodesic domes and bio-art, processes that make up Cuevas artistic creations.

The workshop addresses techniques that are inherent to the artistic work of the digital and virtual medium, dealing with a contemporary theme in which the hybridization of technology and the omnipresence of the digital/virtual medium in human daily life end up transforming the ways in which we relate. Thus, the activity will demonstrate how the strange, different and uncomfortable visual representations existing in the digital art scene reflect the constant sensation of oscillation between familiarity and strangeness, of misrepresentation of the traditional definitions of human, machine, and thing, in addition to demonstrating tenuousness. that divides the real and the virtual, the artificial and the natural.

The activity is open to all audiences interested in deepening technical and theoretical knowledge about digital art and hybridization in contemporary society, as well as undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, artists and researchers

CHANGED SILKWORM GENETICALLY CAN HELP CLEAN DEGRADED ENVIRONMENTS WITH HEAVY METALS

The Biennial of Digital Art, on display until March 18 at the Oi Futuro Cultural Center, in Rio de Janeiro, had among its main attractions in the first week a symposium by renowned American scientist Joe Davis, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ) and the Harvard Genetics Department. Davis, 67, after his talk, decided to contribute to the event's permanent exhibitions before returning to the United States.

Davis's work consists of a silkworm genetically altered by the American scientist and other associated researchers. With the alteration of DNA, the insect produces a synthetic silk that is capable of absorbing heavy metals. The idea of the experiment has a social importance, in the sense of cleaning degraded environments with heavy metals thanks to the absorption potential of the silk produced. For the Biennial, Davis left a cocoon of one of the silkworms that he genetically altered in his laboratory.

Winner in 2012 of the Golden Nica Award, one of the most important awards for interactive art and digital culture in the world, Davis is a pioneer of works of art and molecular biology, such as inserting Wikipedia information in the form of genetic code in the DNA of apples. In Rio de Janeiro, he held a symposium last Tuesday, in which he explained to the public the concept of artist-scientists (hybrid artists), making a connection with the magicians of antiquity.

Digital Art Biennial 2020 “Conditions of Existence”

Biennial 2020 “Conditions of Existence”, the objective is to approach beyond the questions of languages and the propositions between art and society. At this moment, we intend to take a philosophical look at contemporaneity and its possibilities in an overly complex world.

The perception beyond the technical and anthropotechnical, the human, the ontic, the ontological, the inhuman of the biotechnological and computational. How to exist in the world of repetition and technical overproduction?
